Makeup - Lipstick Application Techniques

Lips... so many ways to wear a lip but most of us stick to the same look most of the time.

The latest news in lips has to be Kylie Jenner - who claims to have used only makeup techniques to get a whole new mouth... I am not sure what 'techniques' she has used but they have certainly made a huge difference!

Watch one of the many tutorials on youtube to see how a similar look can be achieved using only makeup.

Today in class we discussed lip makeup products and tried out a few different looks. We love to hear about products and today Branka talked us through a few of her favourite Mac products which included:

6 Mac Liner's you need to own:

  • Light Nude
  • Subculture
  • Dark Nude
  • Oak
  • Spice
  • Night Moth
Mac Red's you also need to own:

  • Ruby Woo
  • Brick
  • Lady Danger
  • Russian Red
  • Cherry

Classic Red Lip Step by Step:

The aim is to correct and accentuate the lips and to balance them.

Choosing a suitable red liner, always start on the cupid's bow.

You can balance your models head on your hand, leaning on her shoulder - this prevents to much movement whilst you are lining

Use small feathery movements to comlpete line down either side of top lip, always mirroring the shape you have created by working from one side to the other.

If your model has small lips, you can always draw just on top of the natural lip line.

Pencil in lower lip.

Choosing your shade of red, pick up colour with a small short synthetic brush and fill in.

My Attempt:

I liked the colour I used here but despite best efforts, the application doesn't look sharp enough for my liking. I think the liner could have been a bit neater and slightly better balanced.

Vamp Lip (Ombre) Step by Step:

Mix no. 10 and no. 8 from the Kryolan Lip Palette to make a deep burgundy.

Starting at the cupids bow, fill lip

Line lip with a black kohl pencil and fill in more around the corners of the mouth.

Go in with a lip brush and blend out the black.

Go back in to the centre and add in more red to finish.

I didn't attempt this look as we were working in a three and we didn't get time but this is the look that Branka created.

Glitter Lip Step by Step:

Fill lip with colour - no liner

Using a shadow brush, load with glitter and pat on

You can add Vaseline and add more glitter

My Attempt:

I didn't like my application here, the glitter has gone over the top of the lip line and the whole thing looks messy. I will re-do this look again and probably use a coloured glitter that better matches the colour below.

Catwalk Avant Guarde Lip Step by Step:

Begin by concealing the cupids bow, (twice if necessary).
Using an angled brush take Mac's Blacktrack.
To create the high lip line start above the cupids bow and draw in your false lip line, mirroring each stroke on the opposite side as you go to make sure it stays symmetrical.
Line lower lip.
Fill in rest of lip & add vaseline for shine.

My Attempt:

I was quite happy with this application, getting the top line balanced was a little challenging but my model has a good lip shape and all in all this took less time than I had imagined. It just shows the versatility of products and that you can use almost anything anywhere!
