Before you start any job there is a code of practice that you must follow to ensure health and safety for both yourself and your model.
Below are the basic checks you should tick off before you start working on anybody. You can find more information at http://www.nasmah.co.uk/#/health-and-safety/4541326447
- Make sure the room is well ventilated
- Make sure the room is well lit
- Wear closed toe shoes
- Tidy any belongings away to ensure clear floor space
- Make sure any leads of any electricals you may be using are tidy and are not dragging
- Wash your hands
- Ensure brushes are clean and disinfected from previous jobs
- Have a separate holder for brushes and tools made dirty on your current job so not to cross-contaminate your clean brushes
- Adjust your models chair to eye level to save yourself from stooping when applying makeup
- Lower your models chair if needed when styling hair
- Place a gown over your model in case of spillage
- Ask your model if they are allergic to anything you may be using
- Ask your model if they have any contraindications which may prevent you from working on them
- Decant your products and use disposables where possible
Remember you are working on a person (!) and you should always remain professional, polite and adapt to your models needs.
- Always be on time (i.e early!)
- Introduce yourself before you begin
- Check with them before using a product directly on them
- Sheild their face and/or ask them to hold their breath if you are spraying products
- Be diligent of the pressure you are using when applying products
- Ensure heated products are shielded when using them close to the scalp and face
- Gage the situation and match your energy accordingly
- Be confident and smile!
