Background Information:

i-D is a British magazine dedicated to fashion, music, art and youth culture.   

The first issue was published in 1980 in the form of a hand-stapled fanzine with text produced on a typewriter. The wink and smile on each front cover is a graphic representation of the magazine's logo and forms i-D's identity. Famous winks have included that of Madonna, Tom Ford, Bjork, Drew Barrymore, Kate Moss and Rihanna - although the wink is now more often replaced by obscuring one eye in some way as seen below.

i-D was founded by designer and former Vogue art director Terry Jones in 1980.

i-D magazine targets it's sophisticated editorial contentent at the young professional, with it's target audience ranging from teens - late twenties. It has a circulation of 100,000.

Overall Fashion Influence:

The magazine is known for it's innovative photography and typography. It pioneered the hybrid style of documentary/fashion photography called 'Straight Up'. At first, these were of punks and new wave youth found on English streets and who were asked to stand against the nearest blank wall. The pictures resulted in a 'top to toe' image and have established the posed 'straight up' as a valid style of documentary picture-making.

i-D has come a long way since the pre-digital age and has developed into a glossy mag and website bursting with creative documentation of contemporary culture and innovative fashion styles, and after 30 years it still manages to surprise and inspire.
