Background Information:

Elle is the world's best-selling fashion magazine. Elle is of French origin and also focuses on beauty, health, and entertainment. It was founded by Pierre Lazareff and his wife in 1945. The title, in French, means 'she' or 'her'.  

In 1944, only weeks after Paris was liberated, the Lazareffs returned to France and resumed their lives, both socially and professionally. Pierre reassumed the top post at Paris Soir, turning it into one of the most widely circulated daily papers in Europe, and Hélène, having realized fashion journalism was her true calling, took what she'd learned abroad and decided to start her own fashion magazine.

On October 1, 1945, "on paper so coarse and yellow that it reminded her of French bread," Hélène Gordon Lazareff did just that, introducing to the world the first issue of ELLE.

The Audience:

Elle reaches over 69 million readers. The vast majority (82 percent) of Elle's audience are women between the ages of 18 and 49. Elle readers have a median age of 34.7 years. Forty percent of readers are single, and the median house income is $69,973. "Our readers are young enough to think about life as an adventure and old enough to have the means to live it", said Robbie Myers, editor in chief.

Today, it is the world's largest fashion magazine, with 43 international editions in over 60 countries. The first international edition of Elle was launched in Japan in 1969. Then its US and UK editions were launched in 1985. Elle is owned by the Lagenardère Group of France. It is published in the US and the UK by Hearst Magazines. This makes Elle the most influential fashion magazine worldwide!
